Before anything else: UK health bodies, including the NHS and the MHRA, advise against using home dopplers to check on a baby's wellbeing. The reason is specific and serious. A doppler can pick up your own pulse, or the placenta, and sound reassuring while something is wrong. Women have delayed going to hospital with reduced movements because a home doppler sounded fine.

What matters instead

If your baby's movements change, slow down or stop, contact your midwife or maternity unit immediately, whatever a doppler tells you. Maternity triage lines are open 24 hours a day and they would always rather see you. Never use a doppler to decide whether to call.

What this device is

A handheld ultrasound doppler that amplifies sound, intended as a keepsake device from the later stages of pregnancy.

It is not a monitor, not a diagnostic tool, and it does not assess your baby's health.

It cannot tell you that anything is fine. It can only make a sound.

It is not a substitute for any part of your antenatal care.

If you use one

Use it sparingly, and only after the point in pregnancy stated in the manual. Do not use it to check on the baby when you are worried — that is precisely the situation it is dangerous in.
