Red light devices for dogs have become common in home care. Before describing this one, the honest part: we are not going to tell you what it will do for your dog's joints. Claims about treating pain, arthritis or injury in animals are veterinary claims, and a shop is not the right source for them.

What the product is

• Wraps around a dog's leg — shaped for the knee area, secured so it stays put while the dog sits or lies down.
• Rechargeable — no cable trailing to a socket while it is in use.
• Red and near-infrared LEDs — the wavelength ranges these devices are built around.
• Timed sessions — use for the length stated in the manual and no longer.
• Two or four pieces per set — for one leg or for treating both sides.

Before you use it

Talk to your vet first. A dog that is stiff, limping, slow on stairs or reluctant to walk needs a diagnosis, not a gadget. Stiffness can be arthritis, but it can also be a cruciate injury, hip dysplasia, a disc problem or something unrelated to the joint at all — and some of those get worse with the wrong activity.

Never use it on broken skin, an open wound, a lump or an area your vet has not seen. Do not shine the light into your dog's eyes. Stop immediately if your dog resists, flinches or seems uncomfortable, and never use a device instead of pain relief your vet has prescribed.
