Solid wood with a row of turned pegs is the version of a coat rack that belongs in a hallway rather than a utility room. It holds the same coats; it just doesn't look like storage.

Why it works

• Solid wood — weight and grain, not veneered board with plastic hooks screwed on.
• Six or eight pegs — 35 cm for a small hallway, 45 cm where the whole family hangs coats.
• Rounded pegs — don't stretch the shoulders of a coat the way a sharp hook does.
• Walnut or light oak — dark and deliberate, or pale and quiet.
• One fitting, many hooks — fewer holes than fitting hooks individually.

A hallway, obviously. Also behind a bedroom door for dressing gowns, in a bathroom for towels, or in a child's room at their height rather than yours.
