This is a home fetal doppler. Before anything else: UK health bodies, including the NHS and the MHRA, advise against using home dopplers to check on a baby's wellbeing. The reason is specific and serious. A doppler can pick up your own pulse, or the placenta, and sound reassuring while something is wrong. Women have delayed going to hospital with reduced movements because a home doppler sounded fine.
What matters instead
If your baby's movements change, slow down or stop, contact your midwife or maternity unit immediately, whatever a doppler tells you. Maternity triage lines are open 24 hours a day and they would always rather see you. Never use a doppler to decide whether to call.
What this device is
- A handheld ultrasound doppler that amplifies sound, intended as a keepsake device from the later stages of pregnancy.
- It is not a monitor, not a diagnostic tool, and it does not assess your baby's health.
- It cannot tell you that anything is fine. It can only make a sound.
